ABOUT[1] =  ("De Fabriek is an artistic and cultural center where art, culture and businesses complement each other. It is a home for artists, a base for companies related to art and culture, and an attractive scene for the public to enjoy art, music and cultural and educational programs.<br\/>The motivation of De Fabriek\'s movement stems from a perceived lack of independent community initiative and creative energy in Rotterdam. We believe that the city needs a cultural movement of its own. A non-commercial movement developed from and by the creative base, in contrast to the highly institutionalized cultural industry in Rotterdam. Our ambition is to bring the cultural and artistic scene up to the level of cities like Berlin and Barcelona.<br\/>De Fabriek is a self-supporting organization, working self-sufficiently as an independent organism. The users and inhabitants of De Fabriek run the organization. Its activities are divided between financially profitable and non-profitable activities, where the ones sponsor the others.<br\/>De Fabriek started as an underground initiative in a squatted factory building in the Rotterdam township Delfshaven. It\'s there that the foundations for the current organization were laid by a group of artists turning the abandoned and ruined site into their housing, ateliers, exhibition and public meeting place. However, after 2 years and in the midst of an advanced \'legalization\' process, authorities deemed it necessary to expel the group from the location for security reasons.<br\/>The initial shock was stunning but the loss was swiftly converted into renewed energy and inspiration with De Fabriek being resurrected at the new location in Nieuw-Crooswijk only a couple of days later. Concurrently, the change of location marked the professionalization of De Fabriek\'s organization and direction, with the group of participants growing to over 30 persons.<br\/>The ambition of De Fabriek is now more than ever to mark its spot on the city, national and international map.");
